Fish from a Dish

This fish-shaped box was inspired by the songline You shall have a fish on a little dish and is my take on recycling and re-using silver items. The lid incorporates the fluted edges of an antique silver slaver. The subtle original engraving of the salver shows through my detailed chasing of the fish scales, as though a memory of the past. Once the concealed box catch is opened, the lid swings open to reveal a Chinese mother-of-pearl fish gaming chip from 1750s swimming on waves at the base of the box. The base is also pierced out so that the mother-of-pearl fish can be viewed from both sides. This box is the signature piece in a series of Silver Darling Boxes, inspired by Scottish tales of Herrings, known as Silver Darlings.
