Animalia

Spending part of her childhood growing up in Kenya no doubt had an influence on Bryony's enjoyment of using animals in her work  – giraffes and their long necks, monkeys in the trees and lions – plenty to excite a child’s – and a designer’s – imagination. So it does seem rather appropriate that Bryony has been Artist in Residence at Edinburgh Zoo!

This experience as Silversmith in Residence at Edinburgh Zoo has informed her Animalia collection – a series of kinetic silver objects, with function and form inspired by the essence of animals and birds.

Colour plays a large part in this collection, with many of the pieces combining silver with hand blown glass. This glass is designed by Bryony and blown by Colin Hawkins of Loco Glass, Cirencester. Fuchsia Flamingos, azure Hummingbirds and smoky grey glass for the Hoopoes.

Multiple pieces in this collection were inspired by both the magical and the real Hoopoe bird. This eye-catching bird with its iconic crest and stunning black and white markings is found in many world myths. It is often seen as a messenger between man and God. In the Hoopoe Sun Worshiper Bowl Bryony mimics the movement of a Hoopoe as it fans its wings, basking in the sun.
